Over time, as predicted, climate change is accelerating and disrupting life on earth big time! Millions of children, women and men are on the run, dislocated, abandoned, as refugees scattered around the earth. It's a matter of time (and given privilege) that the pattern (exodus) will amplify and effect us directly. Of this incoming reality, we are compelled to revise our trajectory and objectives and perhaps embody new resistance. It's utmost that we prepare, we inform and transform at a local and individual level. Step beyond the dogma of mainstream thought and practice. The article presents four interventions, incubated by environmental scientists and writers who are stepping beyond the framework of mainstream science, tech and economics. A convergence of regional and pragmatic ideas, that point to new pathways and perhaps a chance to find "our place" in the rapidly changing environment.

"The dislocation of people due to climate change is intertwined with international justice, borders and race. With global climate disorders, borders make for prisons eventually. The best example of this is the United States, where a continuous proliferation and racial migration has taken place for more than 400 years now, steadily destroying the ecosystem and wiping out the first peoples..." states Dr. Maxine Burkett an environmental scientist and UN envoy based in Hawaii.  Her argument exposes the double standards of climate justice. She urges that citizens of the global south have to take rapid resilient steps, to secure their near term future, against incoming disasters as well as the vicious shackles imposed by the global north. Local movements, locally controlled, adding up to a collective resistance. "Racial bias is playing out within most dominant discourses" of environmentalism, new energy and the refugee crisis, states Maxine.  

"Dynamics which shape the major negotiations around environment, emissions and extraction are mostly framed in the global north, impacting the global south in multiple negative ways. Walls and treaties are unable to contain exodus and climate change. More than 50 islands in the Pacific, nations across Asia, Africa and Latin America now beg for economic revisions, aid and justice... Even a 2 degree change in global temperature will set of failures on multiple levels in the global south and north...which neither regions have the capacity to combat" states Maxine at a recent lecture, explaining the history and racial basis of global exodus. Not just effecting poor people in far away nations, but eventually us all, yet depending how we manage the incoming disruption and use up our temporary privileges.

Our impotency to think and act better is masked by technology. Always hedging our bets on "big techno fixes" that serve the status quo. Professor William Rees indicates with clarity, about the dilemma of hope based on technology. "Most of the net-zero targets for 2050, set by leading industrial nations, are betting on non-existent technology. With great hopes that such systems will be invented in the coming years. That world view at best maintains a status quo, not investing enough on disaster management policies. Thus not ensuring any tangible security for future generations. We are operating a giant mal-adaptive social construct... we cheer the leaders and policy makers who serve capitalism, while muting local needs and opinions, which makes us all complicit in this trajectory of terrible consequences.  Hardly anyone can resist the ethics of unlimited growth, however flawed and short term..." states Rees at a recent online presentation, slamming our innate nature, which discounts eminent future threats while embracing temporal solutions. 

Now that the age of 'big oil' is winding down, we are out to embrace solar, wind and green lifestyles. As the promises of infinite growth have failed, we make space for angry climate activists, teenagers and children. Now that the emancipation of human beings imagined by Aristotle, Hegel and Marx has turned to dust, we embrace the 'Shambhala' and indigenous spirituality. Now that mainstream science is stifled with contradictions, we turn to the sacred and the magical?

"When we face information and outcomes which do not match our given knowledge, we deny, discredit and even forget such realities..." (J. Wexler, Brain and Culture 2006) "Things will get worse at this rate... One can see at a macro level, that politics and culture is mainly influenced by neoliberal ideology, magical thinking, religious fundamentalism and anti-intellectualism. The current specter can be felt across Europe, North America and many leading nations. This so called age of 'post truth', is indeed a reflection our inability as a species, collectively speaking, to deal with multiple emergencies... objective facts do not shape public opinion anymore..." says Professor Rees. 

While Professor Rees illuminates a dark future for humanity, he eventually concludes on a positive note. The importance of defining biophysical limits. The carrying capacity of the earth - which has the final say about our long term existence. Rees insists on placing biophysical limits on major aspects civilization - economics, population, industry and emissions. Pretty much everything we consume in our daily lives. If the entire human population could "afford" the lifestyle (counting emissions) of an average Canadian, American or Russian, we require four earth like planets to sustain that demand (sorry but there's only one earth). 8 billion people are currently living on a nearly exhausted ecosystem. It's obvious that the living planet is not regenerating enough to host more people. 11% of the world's population emitting as much CO2 as the combined 89%.

Labelled as "sacrifice zones" by popular author and ardent critic of capitalism, Naomi Kline refers the vast habitable spaces across the world, that contain billions of people, speaking thousands of languages with a rich diversity of practices and traditions. Mostly powerless to "mainstream economics and gangster capitalism". Thousands of communities are being gradually destroyed and dislocated, to make way for development or as Naomi Kline says "the last wipe out of the planet's reserves". What could not be ripped out and vanquished by 500 years of colonization and industrialization is now being steadily sequestered in the name of progress and green technology. "Places of imperial extraction, these sacrifice zones, where capitalism and environmentalism are at war presently. Racial minorities, lower class communities, tribes and all those who's voice is ignored by mainstream ideology. This exclusion has lead to a big conflict, as economics and industry is crushing those very people who are protecting various ecosystems. Around the world, environmental protectors are being attacked and murdered. If only Elon Musk could buy out Columbia for all it's worth, the Nickel, Zinc and Copper. Hence, colonization is still going on... The destruction of the amazon forest is not just about deforestation, when we see how the remaining tribes view the legacy - of invasion, colonization, genocide and extraction... a timeline that stretches for more than 500 years. However, indigenous people of Amazon have persisted, in small numbers, and they present a great example of resilience, loyalty to earth systems and unity..." states Jason Hickel. 

In his new book 'Less is More', Hickel puts out a radical manifesto, or call it direction of resistance: Degrowth. As a veritable practice (not just theory) aimed at the individual, to create reform, transition and stability.  Hickel's central argument is based on the roots of capitalism, linked to imperialism, racism and endless extraction. The demand to divest from that destructive legacy is coupled with the logic to invest in regenerative life systems. In less than 200 years, our civilization has reached a stage of overshoot, which if not halted, will definitely lead to near term collapse. "If we want to have a shot at halting the crisis, we need to slow down and restore the balance. We need to change how we see nature and our place in it, shifting from a philosophy of domination and extraction to one that’s rooted in reciprocity and regeneration."

Degrowth in essence is eco-socialism. Some may see it as radical intervention and some as just an antonym of growth. For once, we can ignore the increase of GDP annually - boycott and divest the "holy sacraments" of policymakers, the dominant culture and economic pundits. Recognize the enemy we are fighting. It's not people and it's not the climate. It's the system and our parasitical relationship with the planet. We have to explore our own ontology in order to discover new directions, while abandoning certain old maxims. Otherwise we are part of the ecocide! That wealth and constant growth of capital cannot deliver the promise of happiness and a stable future.

"What is it that has enabled life on earth to persist for 350 million years, through every kind of catastrophe, every climate change that’s ever happened on this planet... what might we learn from that? As species we have persisted for 3 million years and that is not about technology, economics nor science...” quoting from the introduction of a charter put forward by Robin Wall Kimmerer, scientist and author of 'Braiding Sweetgrass'. She insists on “being small, staying small and giving more than we take, always work with natural law ... the value of sticking together, in order to ensure a stable future...” Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, Kimmerer shows how other living being, plants, birds, fish and animals - offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. She says "that vital relationship and giving back to nature's generosity has to be rekindled".

Towards the central argument : that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires acknowledgment, protection and celebration of nature. Lets bring the two lenses of knowledge together? That life can be as spiritual and as scientific. Personal growth and material growth have to part ways. Can we hear the languages of other beings? Can we feel the "dying planet" yet? Will we be able to "honor the generosity of the earth?" and perhaps carry it forward, for the future generations of all that remains living.

Truth be told, and no disrespect to Billy Joel, collectively as a species, we did cause an immense warming coupled with mass destruction. The consequences of which are unfolding everyday. Fires and floods, spilling out as climate fury, making daily headlines, replete with stories of loss, migration and incoming global chaos. The recent COP26, United Nation’s climate summit ended in Glasgow Scotland, yet again unable to align industrial civilization with the ecosystem. Instead opposing sides argued over economic deals, carbon budgets, energy transition and net zero futures… all on paper though! Described as “epic fail” and “mere headlines”, 26 COPS later it is quite obvious, that all such summits are in essence a mighty flop! COP could be renamed as ‘Climate Opportunity Politics’, and dare we say that it merits public divestment. Boycott and move beyond the terrible (25 years) quagmire and impotency. COP is a reflection of a “a broken world” and an “appalling addiction to energy”. By now it’s apparent, that the current capitalist economic model of endless (exponential) growth on a finite planet is clearly unsustainable. Simply not possible! By definition, that means that it must come to an end. The only question is whether we will choose to end it, or whether it “ends via system collapse”. This essay is an appeal, distressing but resilient, at a personal and collective level, about transition and transformation - of our relationship with the ecosystem. How we view and use energy, land, water, food and every naturally available resource. Why that rapport has to change...

The last time (3 million years ago) there was this much CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere, the Earth was about 3°C warmer than today. The oceans were almost 30 feet higher than today! Industrial activity over the last 150 years has decimated life across the planet. This "scale of destruction" effectively cuts the brakes, of our current trajectory as well as accelerating the Earth rapidly into a new state “that will be alien to human systems”. Scientific data shows “tipping points” within erratic climate patterns have already been reached. Scientists fear is that one tipping point could trigger another, thus causing a cascade of collapsing environments, driving the planet irreversibly to a far "hotter state". We must remind ourselves, as ordinary citizens, why all such important predicaments are largely absent from climate conferences, greenwash capitalism, agendas set by solar, wind and nuclear energy and also mainstream media. Why are we being lied to? 

Policy makers and the enablers of green-tech and capitalism are trumpeting a new schema: “Carbon budgets”. The premise in a nutshell, is the amount of CO2 we could 'still' collectively release and hope to remain below certain temperature limits. The "underlying fault with such policy" (or many similar ones) are two crucial conditions, effectively ignored. One being Overshoot and Collapse, the other being Jevon's Paradox. Something is "terribly wrong" in the world of economics...

Mid 1970s, Donella Meadows, a scientist working at MIT, proposed that "the current trajectory of growth and required energy will rapidly reach a state of overshoot, and consequently lead to collapse". Her visionary work, backed by computer models using multiple positive / negative feedback loops showed how animals (big and small) and human societies (tribal or modern) have gone through cycles of overshoot and collapse, and the same predicament can be applied to a massive industrial civilization. Back then, she was largely ignored by the scientific sorority, mainstream economists, the IMF, World Bank and United Nations. "Any species, big or small, in the long term is generally defined by the limits imposed by the ecosystem (carrying capacity) and not the other way around" Donella said in 1976. Donella passed away in 2001, yet her legacy of ecologically motivated science grew into an open-source international foundation, with thousands of members proliferating her ideas of "stable systems". Is it vital for us? We, the consequence of overshoot, facing the possibility of collapse. Donella's attempt to combine scientific, philosophical and ecological vision can be felt in her brilliant essay (1985) titled 'Dancing With Systems'.

"The drivers of global economics and the energy needs of 5 billion people may coincide for the moment. However, no one seems to be bothered about how this 'party' will eventually wind down, or worse, just crash..." wrote Prof. William R Catton in his book 'Overshoot' in 1982. Even as Catton's book did not make an impact on the thousands of well meaning economists, scientists, industrialists and politicians, it panned out to show how disaster prone and shortsighted we are, as a species. The book does not roll out prophecies - instead it explains that the "combined overshoot" of population, consumption, emissions, pollution, production and industry would lead to an eventual overall collapse, stretching hundreds of years, before returning to normalcy (stability). "The predicament that we face now is that our population (size) is vastly outgrowing the carrying capacity of the ecosystem. It does not matter if we solve one carrying capacity (say food shortage) as multiple feedback loops effect the rise and decline of any species.. despite our technical superiority, civilization is defined by the limits of the ecosystem" states Catton in a 1988 interview. For decades his book and several papers were ignored by mainstream science and media, even as he worked as a consultant for the World Bank. Today the world is openly grappling with Catton's predicament!

"Carrying capacity of our civilization is clearly in deficit, irrespective of the fixes suggested by science and neoliberal reforms..." Catton said in 1991. "We have been stealing from the future for a long time ... our energy demands are generated by systems which cannot be replenished in the short term ... we are changing the basic conditions of life on earth... from the pristine to the abandoned or ruined.." (Overshoot 1982). 

The deep faith in technology that industrial civilization is vested upon, is described as a condition called "Cargoism" by Catton, as early as 1981. New Delhi, the world's most polluted city is a perfect example of Cargoism. 22 million people living inside a massive 'gas chamber', where decades of technology based intervention has failed to curb pollution, contamination and widespread rise of respiratory diseases. Yet Catton was ignored like Kepler! "It's an astonishing fact that we have managed to destroy vast parts of the ecosystem, without violating a single law. If destruction leads to profit, it's legal!"(Overshoot 1982). Till the end of his life, he maintained a realistic type of optimism, encouraging us to think and act ecologically, as well as enjoy life despite the catastrophes invoked by industrial civilization. The foxes in charge of the hen-house! A brief look at how COP summits are organized reveals the farce and eventual mockery of climate justice. COP is divided into two zones - blue and green. Both zones are manned by the United Nations and it's own police. While activists, journalists, NGOs and scientists interact inside the green zone - the politicians, lobbyists of green-tech, agents of the fossil fuel industry, economists, celebrities and VIPs are busy making future deals inside the blue zone. A common citizen has no access to the blue zone, yet shelling out approximately 100+ euros per day, to be able to access the green zone. "COP organizers (United Nations) don't keep a count of the carbon emissions of the summit itself. There were zero CO2 detectors placed at the conference... flights and hotel prices four times higher than usual..." states Canadian climate scientist Paul Beckwith. Mass media laps up, amplifying the green lies, mandates and mantras. "This is climate countdown" cried the simple minded liberal Amy Goodman! Majority of the speakers and presentations at COP26 belonged to the global north, plus the cherry-picked climate celebrities like Greta Thundberg, Leonardo Di Caprio etc taking up needless space and attention, while thousands of activists, scientists and NGOs from the global south stuck outside Scotland, most of them denied entry into U.K due to Covid. "Hundreds of delegates were ripped off, having to pay thousands of euros for accommodation, local transport, food and even water, all mandated by the British Government..." states a Scotland based newspaper.

We cannot alter climate change and global warming. Both are well in motion in thousands of ways. The gap between those (billions) worst effected by global warming and climate and those (few thousands) who are swearing by unsustainable policies (and getting richer) is widening. The young climate activist who swears by Green-Energy is as delusional as the agents of Exxon, Shell, Mercedes and Toyota selling lies about a future long cancelled. Is why COP and all such institutionally controlled affairs, will always serve economics and industry, and not nature. "There's a great awakening across the world, however small in numbers, after almost 600 years.. people who are rising up against the murder of the planet... That it's NOT OK anymore, to take another person's life, NOT OK to destroy rivers, oceans and forests.. world leaders and the dominant way of thinking cannot provide us with answers nor security..." underlines award-winning writer and journalist Dahr Jamail.

As individuals, without passing the blame, without heckling and wasting time, we are compelled to take our first steps towards transition. Align our lifestyles rapidly over time, building loyalty towards ecology and the living planet (or what remains of it). There's got to be 'enoughness' which is not linked to success, wealth and endless material growth. Love, clarity and compassion over personal ambition and success. Even if we are set for extinction, we seek resilience, adaptation and empathy. Out of that realization comes the will to change. Converging at a personal and collective level, as artists, creators and innovators, we are planting new seeds of transition based on shared visions. Join us?

Prof Herman Daly is one of the founders of the emerging philosophy of ‘ecological economics'. He has long argued backed by tomes of scientific evidence, that to achieve genuine sustainability, the global community should be transitioning to a ‘steady-state’. A new paradigm based on ecological principles derived from "biophysical reality". Shifting our focus from infinite growth to a finite reality. A reality which is telling us that mainstream economics and industry is not only unsustainable, but is also responsible for ecocide. Daley's brave new philosophy directly exposes the contemporary roots of humanity’s self-destructive development trajectory. However it seems that verdict is not enough to convince the leaders, economists, capitalists, futurists, environmental organizations and mainstream media. After all, we as a species have a biological disposition, to expand, to constantly grow, even dangerously beyond the available resources and limits imposed by the living planet.

The dominant narrative of our techno-industrial society is neoliberal economics, for everyone and everywhere. The underlying theme or rule which drives most of global development. Neoliberalism and mainstream science has created a seriously harmful construct, that separates the economy from the environment. It considers the global economy to be independent of environment and the living planet. One of the mental tricks that we apply to perpetuate this fallacy, is to imagine substitutes for any resource that is naturally limited (example - wood can be replaced with coal can be replaced with oil can be replaced by nuclear can be replaced by green energy...) Replace meat with vegan, replace halogen bulbs with LED, replace plastic with eco-plastic? That a new kind of car or washing machine or tomato or ice-cream can save the world. Well, that's bullshit to even begin with. This essay is a response to the new global mantras of sustainability as ways to combat climate change. Contrary to the massive green-washing of our society, scientific research and data reveals our true collective nature, as a parasitical species. Yes we are very clever, yet not nearly smart enough! 

 "Economics’ by contrast, is pure abstraction" says Prof Emiretus William Rees in his recent essay. Rees argues is that we have fooled ourselves, for centuries, by believing that our ingenuity and technology can help us overcome any shortage or misgivings of nature. Standing on that very anthropocentric mantle, for generations we have derived most of our modern economic thinking and action. Hence, on one hand economics is pure abstraction and on the other we have limited resources, finite opportunity and a whopping rise in population and industrialization. With this universal model, moral and ethical considerations are irrelevant - damage to ecosystem, wild animals, forests, rivers, oceans, lakes and communities are mere "externalities". Ideas, policies, resources, land, labor and future plans have been designated to perpetuate that very economic model allover the world. Such cunning or vicious human exceptionalism can only last for a short while. 

A vast majority of politicians, economists, scientists and policy makers believe that the economy can "continuously grow and transition" by extracting new resources and energy, and at the same time use the earth as a "sink hole to dump all the waste". That faulty vision is also mirrored by the biggest risk management corporations, like Re Swiss and the World Economic Forum, when we hear Veronica Scotti say "It is incumbent upon governments to take rapid steps to ensure these policies are both equitable and firm - so that all sectors of the economy and segments of the population can experience an orderly and bona fide transition as soon as possible..." Remember that old Latin phrase, 'Cui Bono' - who gains? The usefulness or utility when estimating the value of an act or policy. Hence those policies and sweeping changes may never be truly equitable nor future-proof.

Are we constrained by the limits of nature? Many people will disagree and many more will turn to technology, energy and material benefits to ignore the point altogether. The prevailing logic is based on economic growth that can continue infinitely, propelled by boundless technology. The world economy is growing still, at a minuscule 2% presently. It's hilarious (if not abject) when we hear renowned business gurus like Prof J. Simon (University of Maryland) exuberantly declare that "we have in our hands now, the technology to feed, clothe, house and supply energy to an ever growing population, for the next seven billion years!" (2009). Later he redacted the preposterous claim by saying "sorry... it's seven million years". Less we forget the reality, where every year the number of refugees increases by millions and 34% of children under the age of ten, do not receive sufficient calories needed per day (WHO 2019). Even if one imagines endless growth with the given power of technology, we are bound to hit a wall, a collapse created by our own counteractions.  

Scientists from the 1970s had begun to predicate collapse and economic slowdown. Human population, feeding off the planet has reproduced very very rapidly over the last 300 years, which is not something normal nor great, when we see the past 10,000 years of history. A stunning fact, that we reached the 7.8 billion figure in less than 300 years, while remaining less than 1 billion for more than 80,000 years (first footprints of human colonization). Clearly a humongous overshoot! At the cost of displacing and killing many many species. As Prof William Rees states "Continuous population and economic growth is an anomaly. The growth spurt that recent generations take for granted, is the single-most abnormal period in human history."

 Humankind is extremely clever, manipulating the physical world in amazing ways, yet not nearly smart enough to rescue itself from the predicament that we have given birth to, by manipulating nature and the ecosystem. Almost 86% of wild animals and their corresponding habitats were wiped out by human colonization and actions in less than 3000 years. Perhaps human beings are not primarily rational as a species. Perhaps we are here for a limited period of time. Particularly extraordinary yet momentary within the long evolution of the planet. Even if that point of view seems negative or stoic, we persist, we hope and are compelled to re-adapt and revise. Perhaps fewer number of human beings will have a better chance at long term survival. Industrial civilization is a form of ecocide.  It is discounting the future, if not erasing it altogether for future human beings. The more we invest into it, the more we overshoot, perhaps already past the tipping point.

"All of the technological solutions being put forward... be it solar, wind, biomass, green growth, circular economy etc etc - they are meaningless. These are big ambitious fantasies, to lull the vast majority of people into confidence, that we can move forward towards a secure future. That change, however amazing in scope, cannot combat  the biophysical reality of nature - which we are experiencing via climate change, pandemic, loss of birds, insects, fish, wild animals and habitat with global warming" highlights Prof William Rees in a recent lecture. Climate change is a symptom and not the root cause, that we are out combat. Mentally how we prepare ourselves for the future is critical and as vital to think (and act) beyond what is being offered to us, by economics, neoliberalism, the dominant culture and it's green colored options. Individually or collectively, we definitely need to step out of the anthropocentric mentality (a trap) and align ourselves with the reality of nature unraveling around us... For good or bad, things are beginning to get really interesting!

Given that a big part of current computing and information technology contributes to pollution, contamination and is totally based on extraction, mining and fossil fuel based energy : the question we are compelled to ask the curators and institutions, is the obvious need (call it responsibility) of reducing harmful emissions, e-consumerism and the environmental impact of non-degradable electronic waste? On many instances, AI and ML are seen as "part" of the solution, born of digital technology, helping us understand and perhaps combat climate change. The array of AI applications within 'climate-tech' can have major implications in future policy making . There are lots of exciting "point solutions", but there’s no real example of AI directly (and meaningfully) reducing global emissions yet. In fact it adds to global emissions. A fact that every time we get on a virtual video conference or create an elaborate stage for artistic expression or take a flight, we are emitting and polluting. Like digital art, video and music, AI and ML are also hooked on energy. Radical ideas of degrowth, deep adaptation, collapse resilience and change of lifestyle seem to be omitted currently, from the discourses within Tech-Art, AI and ML - consequently the general objectives are aligned with the mainstream culture, call it emphasis on technology, to be able to combat climate change.

In the near future, we foresee AI and ML practitioners working within institutions and with individuals (artists, scientists, entrepreneurs etc) offering experience, solutions, utilities and practical nuggets of "deep learning". Tech-Art is a rapidly evolving arena and primarily open-source. Initiatives like BeFantastic are promising and supportive at the same time. Especially for the younger generation, who are at the receiving end of climate change as well as the global policies being framed for the future. Often institutions and individuals avoid discussing their own emissions and carbon footprint, however adding up tons of CO2 every year if not every month. Yet the culture is changing bit by bit - as we are told by Pro Helvetia that " following the Swiss Arts Council's “Guidelines for ecological sustainability at work” Pro Helvetia is dedicated to creating resource-friendly and ecologically sustainable working practices and makes an annual CO2 compensation payment for all air travels undertaken by its employees worldwide. In addition, it has the carbon footprint of its infrastructure assessed once per funding period".  

With BeFantastic, optimistically we anticipate similar progressive steps to be taken by more institutions, technologists, artists and policy makers alike. Steps and pathways be they collective or individual, that lead to an overall positive impact upon the ecosystem. However, the equation between climate change and our current levels of consumption, output and emissions cannot be solved by 'techno-fixes'. Tech-Art should address people and their ecosystems, and not just shine the light on technology. People and art play an essential role together, in shaping imagination and finding solutions. What's most encouraging is that a majority of the voices and speakers of BeFantastic's initiatives are female - making the dialogue and future outcomes a lot more democratic and diverse. BeFantastic Together is inviting young artists, environmentalists, technologists, programmers, climate activists and community makers to join through their fellowship program.
