FEMWAV and Self-Empowerment

By Audio Pervert - 7/14/2020

To symbolise the position of women (and their talent) in any society, one has to seek, listen, document and amplify female narratives. Stories, dialogues and narratives can serve as collective celebration on one hand, and on the other hand portray individual realities and existing challenges. In April, FEMWAV launched a new self-empowerment model titled 'Narratives'. The basic tenet behind the audio-visual series is to record, document and amplify female voices and content from India. New talent being the focal point, instead of the divas and favoured names of the scene. Focussing regionally and giving the artists a free hand at creating the content and setting the pertinent agenda. Listen to the 1st episode recorded at Synthfarm 2020. The second episode of Narratives is focussing on emerging female composers, singers and DJs based in Bangalore. A vibrant group of artists, young and fervent, talking about their backgrounds, about composition, genres new and old, and how they express themselves via music and dance.

The symbolic representation of women in contemporary and independent music circles of India is simply dismal and boring. Cherry picked divas, branded ceremonies and institutional bias do nothing but perpetuate exclusivity, business and mediocrity. India being no exception to that zeitgeist, yet willy nilly more women and non-binary artists, composers and DJs are making their presence felt via music, especially at a regional level. The formation, growth and collective energy of new female/non-binary talent in India is clearly an interesting space, to document and amplify. Narratives #2 was curated and recorded by Ritu VK, a multi-genre DJ and a contemporary dancer and FEMWAV's newest member. Listening to the various artists, what's most refreshing and surprising is the diverse professional fields that each one is connected to. Coming from practices such as law, bio-tech, ecology, education, finance, analytics, dance and fitness, yet all are discovering new vistas - by composing, playing music and or DJing. We notice a transition in place with some of these artists, having left standard career paths, taking up music (professionally) during the past few years. They are emphasising on genres as well as the crossover points within electronic music, made of techno, house, jazz, bossa nova, hip-hop, afro-beat, baile-funk and even pop and bollywood. “This was my first project with Femwav, and the idea behind this narrative was to showcase a few strong female artists from our city... it was really inspiring what each one had to say. This is one of the things which makes Bangalore an amazing hub for arts and culture.” says Ritu VK.
