AGF Bass Poet

By Audio Pervert - 9/04/2018

"writing in the electronic age. if emotions have cycles. some mad-hatter pattern. i am gathering thoughts from every corner of this electronic planet" says German artist AGF aka Antye Greie-Ripatti. Clearly autodidactic, a "sonic warrior" and electronic music producer for over 20 years now. Her sound is difficult to fit into a particular genre like many indie artists, yet a wide collage of 'Berlin' experimental techno, spoken word, abstract video and art creates the spirit of AGF. She covers feminism, politics, activism and radical ecology to create her "self-sustaining environment". Born in former East Germany, she developed a independent approach early on, as her press note states " while projecting her voice to fight against oppression, by supporting marginalized communities and calling out injustice, most recently through female:pressure, a support community and promotional platform for female-identified electronic musicians. Currently based in Northern Finland "

Also an entrepreneur, leading her own music publishing label AGF Producktion, with a few top-notch collaborations with Eliane Radigue, Gudrun Gut, Kaffe Matthews, Vladislav Delay, Craig Armstrong, Ellen Alien etc. The philosophy of Antye Greie-Ripatti is clearly set on DIY [Do-it-yourself] and freedom of thought. REVISTA ARTA magazine by Raluca Oancea states "sound sculptor, poet, composer, gender activist, sound and new media curator – reconfirming by means of her own praxis Nietzsche’s hypotheses on the self as 'dividuum' as well as contemporary takes on the nomad subject and multiple, virtual identities " Her pioneering work colluded with Electric Indigo : which has been important in the evolution of Female Pressure. One of the most unique examples of international support for empowerment of women artists and information sharing : female pressure is an international network, website and data archive of female, transgender and non-binary artists in the fields of electronic music and digital arts. Founded by Electric Indigo, the current roster includes more than 2500 artists made of musicians, composers and DJs to visual artists, cultural workers and researchers.

What is your role in Female Pressure?
female:pressure is a network and data base, which was founded 1998 by Susanne Kirchmayer aka DJ, producer Electric Indigo. Actually the site explains it all femalepressure.net. I joined around 2004. Since 2013 I worked actively with FP to help increase visibility on twitter, tumblr and various online networks. Further on, I participated in discussions and initiated the Rojava solidarity campaign .. Check out my Visibility Blog for female:pressure on tumblr. My role in female:pressure has gradually grown every year. As such there is no hierarchy and nor given roles, members do what they want and can. It's growing and it's a wonderful community.

What is your new album all about? What is #dissentova?
I created a feminist poetry sound series in 2010. As a starting point, i set out to build a narrative via language. I go back in time, to find and study the earliest known poetesses and their writings in order to re-interpret the narratives as sound and music and also newer poems. So far I did 4 of these series. German edition: Gedichterbe and Finnish edtion: KuunteleAs the word dissent signifies, these works are inspired from feminist language explorations. I am focussing on poetry, sound art and the 'her-story' in Russia from the mid-18th century to the present day. I selected 15 iconic figures in Russian culture and created fragmented tributes in the DISSIDENTOVA series.

What is Bass Poet?
Ha ! I do love bass .. bass is a huge ingredient in my sound. And so is language, words and poetry. Like vibrations which can literally move your flesh and bones, i like that force… especially underlaying words which are a product of thought and intellect. This combination, is my principle discourse. Poetry is language, but also a concept - i can make a poem without words. I think what is true in poetry does not have to be true in reality, it is an art-form with it's own language.

What advise can you give to new emerging female talent?
I just happen to read the Fembot5 project in India. My advise is - just keep working, study the field and work and follow your ideas. Consistently get better at what you do and do not try to be like someone else, be yourself and also be critical to what you are currently capable of. You can call out bullshit, but like everything else … be mentally aware. You can’t demand love. I guess something i realized later in my career, that a crew, a team is a wonderful thing to have. Read this ... it's lovely!
