Time-check - february 2011 ( and dem prophetic systems hark that the world is coming to an end ? nevermind ) - flash back @ 96' when my parents gifted me a Korg 364 Synthesizer Workstation. My first foray into a world where musical instruments were simply number crunching systems. Since then, sound, technology, tastes, forms, genres and my own ears and understanding has changed. It has been a roller coster ride as a musician and sound sculptor, traversing and absorbing the upheavals and trends of the global audio-canvas - far and wide in latitudes and fidelity ! Sound is an invisible medium, and creates amorphous and androgynous stimulus in our consciousness. Pitch is a mathematical set of intervals alongside words, lyrics and the human voice riding this imaginary space created by beats, which gives birth to music. Yet the quantified value of music remains only in your mind and in your conscious memory - and not for a dog or an ant or the song bird on a tree - Does an elephant prefer a D note to a C note ? Does the cat prefer a Waltz beat to a 2-step ? Well, ok parrots can mimic. Yet then, is a whale song about music as much as the resonant frequency manipulations of bird calls ...
Sound is like taste, or so i have come to realize in the last 15 years. Just like a taste in your mouth can trigger a memory - a song, a tune, a groove or even a second long sample can conjure similar experiences and feelings . Music can be psychosomatic ... An odyssey of sorts, all inside your mind, traversing many cultures, history and social paradigms - via sound - via songs, music eventually turns into a medium itself - a stereoscope audio highway - music and sounds within the source become the facilitators of thoughts and ideas to happen and take a place in one's consciousness. Lady Gaga or Beethoven or ocean waves or bat chirps, you will alway and only perceive the music and sound, inside your head - in your own peculiar understanding. And hopefully even if your peers are tone deaf ~
Trekking on - into the endless canvas of frequency, synthesis and imaginary sonic objects in a virtual and dynamic binary universe - the space that does not exist in a real sense, i have come to realize a growing notion - the idea of music being a human construct fades into a emerging view that everything audible or sonic in this universe is just eventually a collection of frequencies. Music is an intellectual process, which involves the manipulation of frequencies divided over a time span. Sound is vibration and that it encompasses everything we hear and also what we don't ..
Yet, all the cultural and psychological alliterations aside, music is a combination of balanced frequencies and calculated spaces inside an imaginary space - Nature, Noise, Electronic and all other aural systems and auditory expanses remain free, unbalanced, changing inside a sphere of constant vibration. Why don't we perceive that as music or even understand the music of the universe ?? Oh wait here comes Music Concrete by Pierre Schaffer.
